Emerald bags the top spot as Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year

After years of serving up shades that could double as stripper names -- including, but not limited to, “Tangerine Tango” (2012), “Honeysuckle” (2010), “Blue Iris,” (2008) and “Sand Dollar” (2006) -- Pantone has picked “Emerald” as the crown jewel of the color wheel for 2013.

Since my compatriot in the Home section, Craig Nakano, has already touched on the topic of Pantone 17-5641 Emerald as 2013’s top-trending hue - as well as the paint-color prognostications offered by Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore (hint: they’re not Emerald) -- we won’t bother rehashing it (you can read it here). Instead we’ll highlight a few of the fashion folk the Pantone people namecheck as evidence for their choice: Tracy Reese, Nanette Lepore, Barbara Tfank, NAHM and Marimekko.

It may be, as the wise sage Kermit the Frog once sang, that “it’s not easy being green,” but it’s about to get a whole lot less lonely.
