Rated F? Non-kids’ book ‘Go the ... to Sleep’ could become film

The profane book for adults written in the form of a children’s book, “Go the F-- to Sleep,” may soon be coming to a multiplex near you. The husband-and-wife writing team, actors Ken Marino and Erica Oyama, have signed on to adapt the book for the screen.

Marino was one of the stars of the cult hit “Party Down.” More recently, he’s directed and starred in the spoof of “The Bachelor”-style shows, “Burning Love,” a Yahoo Internet series coming to the cable channel E. Oyama is the series’ writer and creator.

“Go the F-- To Sleep” was a runaway hit in 2011 for indie publisher Akashic Books (here’s a link to its publisher’s page, with the complete, unredacted title). Written by Adam Mansbach, himself a frustrated parent, and illustrated by Ricardo Cortez, the not-for-kids book struck a chord with just about anybody who’d tried to put a resistant child to bed.

It was so popular that a genuine safe-for-children edition was also published, a real bedtime book for kids. Another version, one that’s not at all sleep-inducing, is Samuel L. Jackson’s rendition of the audio book. A video of him recording it went far, wide, and got remixed (like this explicit hip-hop version).

Deadline reports that Oyama and Marino will write the script for Fox 2000, “Twilight Saga” producer Karen Rosenfelt and “All You Need Is Kill” producer Erwin Stoff.

“Go the F-- To Sleep” was a No. 1 Los Angeles Times bestseller, and has spent 49 weeks on our bestseller list. Last week, it was still there, at No. 10.
