Summer depression: How to chase the blues away

Share

• If depression hits at a predictable time, try to head it off at the pass.

Consult an appropriate professional sooner rather than later, says Dr. Norman Rosenthal, clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University and author of “Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation.” “Depression is often easier treated when it’s just beginning as compared with when you’re in the middle of it.”

• Plan vacations accordingly.

If climatic factors such as heat seem to bring you down during the summer, counteract those effects by heading north — or anywhere temperatures are cooler.

If you know that you have difficulties during a particular season or time of year, plan to take time off then so that you’re not compounding the stress when you’re at your most vulnerable.

“You don’t want to be working at full tilt at that time,” says Rosenthal.

• Discuss the possibility of seasonal adjustments in medications with your doctor.

• If heat seems to trigger a sour mood, keep your home and work space cool. Cool showers or baths can also provide relief.

• If bright light causes agitation, wear dark glasses outdoors.
