Diapers in the Maybach? Jay-Z on becoming a dad

Share

Jay-Z sees himself changing diapers in the very near future.

GQ’s man of the year says that he fully intends to be an active and involved father when wife Beyonce, due in February, gives birth to their first child.

“Providing -- that’s not love,” he told the magazine. “Being there -- that’s more important.”

For many men, though, fatherhood may be synonymous with finances. According to health writer Jeannine Stein, “a study published online in March in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that among 66 couples, men were freaked out about family and pregnancy issues and generally felt overloaded. Women were anxious about the same topics, but men processed them as financial stressors, while women dealt with them as emotional stressors.”

For those fathers who are more emotionally involved, being a dad may come with some physiological changes. Fatherhood depletes men’s testosterone levels, according to a recent study in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences. And overall, the men who spent more time in child care had lower testosterone levels.

Does being a dad mean Jigga would, as MTV puts it, “lose his swag?” Probably not, although fatherhood certainly changes people. As put by Peter Ellison, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University who was not involved in the study, fatherhood “makes you a man. It’s what men are supposed to do.”
