Special to the Times

OVERVIEW
The Tahoe Hybrid is a full-size SUV, with seating for up to eight. It has a second-generation, two-mode hybrid system (developed in conjunction with BMW and Chrysler and also seen in the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids) as well as GM’s electrically variable transmission (EVT). It also has an all-aluminum 6.0-liter V8 and can tow up to 6,200 pounds. Front-wheel-drive models are said to achieve 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway (compared with 14 and 20 for the standard, two-wheel-drive, 5.3-liter V8).

In addition to hybrid mode, this Tahoe can run on four cylinders and has been lightened (to help compensate for the 400-pound bulk of the hybrid components) and improved aerodynamically.

OUR TAKE
It’s a step in the right direction. The technology will be seen in more models to come, both from Chevrolet and its development partners, so that’s positive. But in the grand scheme of things, 21mpg is still less than impressive.
