OVERVIEW
So far, all the adjectives, hyperbole, purple prose and eulogies have been directed at the M3 Coupe -- which it so richly deserves, endowed as it is with a 4.0-liter V8 engine, a carbon fiber roof that saves 44 pounds in weight, and a suspension that’s adjustable for normal, comfort or sport modes.

The fresh news, however, is that an extra two doors have entered the picture. The M3 will also be available in North America as a sedan. So four occupants may now enjoy the benefits of satellite navigation and connectivity for not only the iPod, but also the iPhone, while going through corners at an alarming rate with complete safety, thanks to such driver aids as Corner Braking Control and an electronic limited-slip differential.

The M3 has always been a favorite among driving enthusiasts and although some may feel that all this technology is weighing the new model down somewhat, it certainly makes sense to have some computer control of the car’s prodigious talents. The hardware and the software exists, so why not use it?

OUR TAKE
The good thing about the V8 (previous M3s have all used straight sixes) is that it’s 7% lighter than the previous generation’s powerplant and uses 8% less fuel. The car is also bristling with the kind of gadgets that its core customers would just love to play with. Another hit from BMW.
