Racing! Big Kentucky Derby prep race today at Santa Anita

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we finally get to see McKinzie vs. Bolt D’Oro.

Best day of the meet so far at Santa Anita. Too bad the weather is going be lousy. The rain is supposed to start mid to late morning and continue all day. It’s an early first post of noon, which starting next week will be the regular start time on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, they inaugurate a new 11:30 a.m. brunch first post.

Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo likes to try different things and this is one of them. But one thing you can be sure of, if this isn’t working then you can expect it to revert back to the old time in a few weeks. At issue is how well the early start will integrate into the end of betting on East Coast cards. It may generate more revenue and interest or it could be swallowed up. I think it stretches the day so you can bet on the races and do something else in the afternoon. I like it. We’ll know soon enough what everyone else thinks.

On Saturday, the San Felipe is the biggest race as No. 1 and 2 ranked Derby horses are meeting for the first time. McKinzie is the slight 8-5 favorite over Bolt D’Oro, who is 2-1. Can’t believe that given this race’s history that it’s only a Grade 2. It’s the sixth race at around 2:55 p.m. We have a pretty extensive look at the race, but we’re going to send you to our website to read it in its entirety. Just click here.

Another big race is the Santa Anita Handicap, formerly the signature race of the meet. You can expect the race to be moved to June next year, possibly replacing the Gold Cup. Maybe a change in schedule can return it to its past glory and maybe even increase the purse from $600,000 to the previous $1 million. It’s the 10th race at about 5 p.m. If you missed it, we talked to trainer John Sadler and owner Kosta Hronis about the favorite, Accelerate. Just click here.

As for the other stakes, check below in our Santa Anita preview section.

A handicapping lesson

Here’s our weekly contribution from Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). The thinking is if you can know and understand the strategies, it will make you a better handicapper.

It’s yours, Rob.

Today’s lesson is from Saturday’s 11th race at Santa Anita.

“The final race of the day, a maiden special weight at 1 ⅛ miles on the turf. The WCHR (and ECHR) are known for not only debut winners, but maiden races in general. One of the most useful words when it comes to understanding maidens is “INTENTION.” Let’s take a look at our top pick HOPE WINS (#1). The Phil D’Amato sprinter ran five furlongs at Del Mar back in November, followed by a 6 ½ furlong effort down the hill here a month later. Those were the races given to set her up for the route today. She clearly needed both and here’s the thing, do they move out to a mile, or even 1 1/16? Nope. They move from 6 ½ to 1 ⅛ miles, that’s a sign of confidence, giving her now what she wants, long, long, and longer. If you watch her down the lane last time out, Mike Smith was clearly teaching her, allowing her to find her lead switches, find her stride, asking for very little, giving her a few cracks of the whip but barely even extending his arms, knowing her next start around two turns was the goal. A good effort is on the way, plain and simple. PARTY DANCER (#2) is also well intended. She strings races together for the first time here in her third lifetime start, now moved from a mile to 1 ⅛, giving her what Simon Callaghan believes she wants, longer, with Drayden Van Dyke, which is always a great sign for just about any barn these days. We’re expecting a step forward today with this one as well, which, in the 7-1 to 10-1 range, is certainly worthy of the risk-reward associated.

“Hot / Cold Race Trends: none

“Maiden Listed Condition: MSW

“WCHR Estimated Level: $20,000

“Win Contenders (order of preference): 1-2

“X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): none

“Positive Notes:

“8 Heaven Escape - Strings races together for the first time ever, telling us some good health is entering the picture, which of course, opens the door to a good effort.

“Negative Notes:

“9 Temple Princess - Has run at a mile, 1 ⅛, 6 ½, now back to 1 ⅛, with her fifth jockey up in six tries. The signs of connections who have no idea what to do with her right now?

“Morning Line Underlays / Overlays:

“1 Hope Wins - Morning Line 4-1 / WCHR Line 5-2

“TOP PICK: HOPE WINS (#1 4-1 Smith)

“SECOND CHOICE: PARTY DANCER (#2 8-1 Van Dyke)”

Santa Anita review

The feature on Friday was won by Battleground State over a mile on the turf for Cal-bred fillies. Interesting a Cal-bred would be named Battleground State, as that is one thing California is not. Flavien Prat had the filly well positioned mid-turn headed for the homestretch. He swept her into first, past X S Gold and held off a late charging My Aunt Tillie.

She paid $15.40, $8.80 and $5.20 for trainer Neil Drysdale, who picked up his eighth win in only 32 starts this meeting.

“She made a nice little run down the hill [Jan. 5] and I thought she really ran well today,” Drysdale told Mike Willman of Santa Anita.

Here’s your preview of the Big ‘Cap. Just click here.

The first stakes of the day is the Grade 1 $400,000 Triple Bend Stakes for older horses going 7 furlongs. City Of Light is the 6-5 morning-line favorite. He won the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes in his last out and four bullets in his last seven works. Van Dyke rides him for the second time, replacing Gary Stevens. Edwards Going Left is the second choice at 9-5. He finished second in the Malibu and won his last time out by 6 lengths in California Cup Sprint. Post is about 1:40 p.m.

Up next is the Grade 1 $400,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile, going guess how long, on the turf. This should be a showcase for Eclipse Award winning World Approval, shipping in for trainer Mark Casse. He’s won six of his last seven, including the Breeders’ Cup Mile. He picks up Prat as his rider. He’s listed at 4-5, with a post of about 2:15 p.m.

And there is one more stakes, the $75,000 China Doll Stakes for 3-year-old fillies going a mile on the turf. It has a field of 12 with Ippodamia’s Girl the 3-1 favorite.

There are five turf races scheduled on the 11-race card, but don’t be surprised if the rain changes that so they can save the course for the two turf stakes races.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

NINTH RACE: Liberty Jack (3-1)

Gelding from Billy Morey did not handle class jump last time but was very impressive breaking his maiden one back and should be very hard to hold off in this restricted claimer.

Friday’s result: Trap Queen couldn’t take the heat and faded when the real running began.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com (here’s a video) and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart’s LA play of the day

FIFTH RACE: No. 3 Keep Walkin (5-2)

She has been freshened for seven months since last seventh-place Golden State Derby trial outing and earned solid Trackmaster speed figures in prior three starts. Trainer Mike Casselman has always enjoyed good results with layoff horses. Plus, favored Tough To Figure, a high-strung filly, looks vulnerable from the rail post.
