Unauthorized sterilizations: An article in the July 14 California section about female prisoners sterilized without proper approvals said the procedures violated state law. The sterilizations violated state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation regulations, not state law.

Detroit bankruptcy: An article in the July 19 Section A about the city of Detroit’s declaration of bankruptcy said that General Motors and Chrysler were saved from bankruptcy by a U.S. government bailout. The automakers declared bankruptcy and received a bailout.

Blaine Vess: An article in the Business section elsewhere in this edition erred in saying that entrepreneur Blaine Vess started his business at Stanford University. It was North Central College in Illinois. The article also incorrectly identified Aisha Wynn as his wife. They are only business partners. The errors were detected after the section went to press.
