A photo of the legs created for Aimee Mullins by the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen. The basic functional legs, with the sockets, were carved per McQueen’s directives from solid ash by Bob Watts at Dorset Orthopaedic in the United Kingdom, and then the finished carvings were done in London by McQueen’s team. Mullins wore these in McQueen’s runway show in September 1998, shifting the conversation about prosthetics and design. (Aimee Mullins)

Bespoke fairings are specialized coverings that surround an existing prosthetic leg, accurately recreating the body form through a process that uses three-dimensional scanning to capture the unique leg shape. Fairings not only replicate the lost contour, they allow expression of personality and individuality. (Ronny Knight / Bespoke Innovations)
