Dog rescued from San Francisco Bay, owner sought

It’s not clear how the dog wound up in the middle of San Francisco Bay, but when windsurfers and a boating commuter stumbled upon the Labrador mix on Monday, she was cold and in need of help.

“She was shivering and wet and very shy,” said 52-year-old Lisa Grodin, whose husband, Adam Cohen, found the dog as he was commuting across the bay to their home in Berkeley about 6:45 p.m.

Grodin said Tuesday that her husband saw a group of windsurfers with “their sails down around this little black dot that turned out to be a dog.... He stopped because he thought there might be a problem.”

Cohen took the dog aboard his craft, and he and Grodin have been watching her since the rescue.

“He was out there, he was not near anything, he was in the channel and she was trying to paddle her way near Angel Island,” Grodin said.

“She’s the sweetest, sweetest thing.... She slept for hours and then she ate and then she was on the mend,” Grodin said.

They checked to see if the dog had a microchip — which allows for electronic tracking — but she does not, Grodin said. They’re hoping the owner comes forward to reclaim the dog.
