SAN DIEGO -- Mayor Bob Filner has signed a letter of resignation, pending City Council approval of a proposal reached during mediation between his lawyers and the city attorney over a sexual harassment lawsuit against the mayor, city officials said Friday.

The City Council is set to hold a meeting at 1 p.m. Friday to consider the deal struck during three days of mediation. The council will take public testimony and then meet in closed session.

Once council members emerge from the closed session, they will announce their vote and list the details of the deal. Filner may also make comments.

The deal involves a financial settlement between the city and Filner and his attorneys over legal fees and potential damages from a lawsuit filed by Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred on behalf of Filner’s former director of communications, Irene McCormack Jackson.
