Katie Pomerantz and Mikaela Pollock decided on a whim Friday morning that they would head to San Francisco. After the two landmark decisions from the Supreme Court on Wednesday, they couldn’t miss what was sure to be a jubilant gay pride celebration in the city.

“We just thought, ‘We gotta be there,’ ” Pomerantz said.

The Los Angeles couple booked their flight, reserved a hotel room and headed to work.

When news broke Friday afternoon that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals had lifted its stay on same-sex marriage in California and that ceremonies could resume effective immediately, they were thrilled.

“I’ve been waiting for my wedding band,” Pomerantz said. The couple had held a wedding ceremony in front of friends and family in 2011 but promised to wear their engagement rings until they could legally marry.

Pomerantz and Pollock hope to marry this weekend in San Francisco, where they have several close friends and where officials have promised to keep City Hall open late and through the weekend to issue licenses and perform marriages. Los Angeles County offices closed at 5 p.m., and officials have no plans to issue licenses this weekend. The L.A. offices are to reopen at 8 a.m. Monday. Orange County offices will also reopen on Monday.

“It would be really lovely to be able to share that with them,” Pomerantz said of her wedding, adding that she’s especially excited that their marriage will be recognized by the federal government now that the Defense of Marriage Act has been struck down. “We just bought a house. We’re thinking of having kids. It’s all pretty awesome.”

With San Francisco’s City Hall sure to be packed, Pomerantz isn’t sure she’ll be able to officially tie the knot this weekend. If not, she says, she’ll head to the Los Angeles County office first thing Monday morning.

“But I’m going to bring a dress and shoes” this weekend, she said. “We’re going to try!”
