Marine just returned from Afghanistan struck, killed in Bay Area

A U.S. Marine who had recently returned from Afghanistan was struck and killed in the Bay Area on Tuesday by a man suspected of driving under the influence.

Alexander Yohn, 23, of Emeryville, was taken into custody shortly after 1 a.m. after an employee of a Fremont Taco Bell called to report that a drive-thru customer appeared intoxicated, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Yohn drove away from the Taco Bell at a high rate of speed and, after he failed to yield in his Mini Cooper, he collided with motorcyclist Andrew Silva, a 23-year-old Marine lance corporal who had returned from Afghanistan to Union City in February, the newspaper reported.

Yohn then crashed his Mini Cooper into a utility pole and the car caught fire. Authorities told the newspaper Yohn then ran to a nearby field, where an officer took him into custody.

Yohn was booked Tuesday evening on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit and run causing death or injury, the Chronicle reported. His bail was set at $150,000.
