Orange County beaches reopen after surfer reports shark encounter
Authorities on Monday reopened a stretch of Huntington Beach coastline that had been closed for 24 hours after a surfer reported being bumped by a shark.
The closure affected the southern end of Bolsa Chica State Beach and the northern end of Huntington State Beach, according to the city’s Marine Safety Division.
Huntington Beach authorities said the surfer was in the water near Tower 16 -- the southern end of Bolsa Chica State Beach--when the shark approached Sunday morning.
A Coast Guard helicopter and watercraft searched the water but did not locate a shark, according to the Orange County Register.
Last summer, Huntington Beach fire officials closed water access for the first time after a 7-foot great white shark showed “aggressive behavior” and bumped a surfer. The beach, however, stayed open.
A few months later, a 10-foot shark that rushed a surfer prompted closures of Bolsa Chica State Beach, Seal Beach and Sunset Beach.
