Burglars sought in smash-and-grab at Palo Alto Bloomingdale’s

Police are searching for a team of burglars who crashed through the front doors of a Palo Alto Bloomingdale’s with a stolen vehicle and made off with a “large amount of jewelry” early Wednesday morning.

The thieves triggered an alarm at the Stanford Shopping Center about 4 a.m., Palo Alto police said. Security personnel arriving at the scene discovered the Bloomgindale’s glass front doors smashed and several glass jewelry display cases broken inside.

The exact value of the stolen jewelry is unknown, police said.

Surveillance camera footage shows a red SUV smashing through the glass doors in reverse and three suspects, wearing black hooded sweat shirts, entering the store and breaking the glass display cases.

The suspects were inside the store for about two minutes before escaping in the SUV. The car’s license plate, captured by surveillance cameras, appeared to match that of a car reported stolen last weekend, authorities said.

Police located the abandoned vehicle at 9:44 a.m. Wednesday.

Detectives are investigating whether there’s any connection with a similar incident in February at a camera store, where a pair of burglars made off with thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise, police said.
