On consecutive nights this weekend, the 5 Freeway will be shut down in both directions in San Juan Capistrano as construction crew demolish the southern half of the Ortega Highway bridge.

The freeway, a primary north-south artery in southern Orange County, will be closed starting at 11 p.m. Friday, as will the Ortega Highway overpass. The freeway is scheduled to be reopened by 7 a.m. Saturday.

The cycle will be repeated Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Traffic, both northbound and south, will be routed off the freeway and around the construction work.

The demolition work is expected to be completed by 7 a.m. Sunday, but Caltrans officials said it is possible that some of the work could be extended into the following weekend.

The north side of the bridge will be demolished at a later date.

The work is part of a nearly $90-million project to rebuild the interchange at Ortega Highway, which leads into downtown San Juan Capistrano in one direction and into the Cleveland National Forest in the other.
