Woman fleeing on bike shot by officers after wild crime rampage in Santa Ana, police say

Share

Santa Ana police shot and injured a woman Tuesday night after she allegedly went on a crime rampage and then tried to escape on a bicycle.

Alma Ramirez’s binge began at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday when she tried to carjack an elderly couple at knifepoint at 5th and Mountain View streets, according to Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, spokesman for the Santa Ana Police Department. The woman allegedly wounded the man in the car with the knife.

“She got away with keys but not with the car,” Bertagna told reporters.

From there, Ramirez was involved in two separate disputes with two men, and then tried to break into a convenience store, he said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw Ramirez riding off on a bicycle while holding a knife in her hand.

She rode to the 5500 block of West 5th Street, where police shot her.

Ramirez was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery, authorities said. She was in stable condition Wednesday and expected to survive.

It is unclear whether she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

An investigation was continuing. Once she is released from medical care, Ramirez will be arrested on suspicion of carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
