Anaheim man charged in attempted sexual assaults on jogger, neighbor

An Anaheim man is expected to be arraigned Monday for allegedly attacking a woman on a jogging trail and attempting to sexually assault a neighbor.

Mario Orlando Montano, 55, is accused of entering his neighbor’s home Dec. 9 after he was let in by a child. He asked the 42-year-old woman who lived there for sex and when she declined he cornered her in a room, according to authorities. Montano kept telling her he wanted sex, tried to put his arm around her and unzipped his pants, authorities said.

The woman told him she would report him to his landlord, prompting Montano to leave the house, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

A day later, Montano is accused of tackling a 24-year-old jogger in Anaheim Hills after trying to engage her in conversation. The woman didn’t know him.

After Montano allegedly knocked her to the ground, prosecutors say he climbed on top of her as she screamed and struggled to get away, knocking out a tooth when he covered her mouth. He allegedly unzipped his pants, but the jogger was able to kick him off and run to a nearby home to call 911.

Anaheim police found Montano on the trail and arrested him.

He’s charged with one felony count each of attempted forcible rape, assault with the intent to commit a sexual offense and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. He faces possible sentencing enhancements for great bodily injury to a sexual assault victim and causing great bodily injury.

If convicted, he faces a maximum 12 years in state prison and lifetime sex offender registration. Montano is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have been a victim of Montano to contact Supervising District Attorney Investigator Paul Carvo at (714) 347-8794 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) 817-6227.
