San Diego County brushfire burns 4,700 acres, damages 8 structures
A brushfire in a rugged area of northeast San Diego County has burned more than 4,700 acres and destroyed or damaged eight structures, Cal-Fire said Monday night.
The fire is 15% contained and threatens more than 100 structures.
Evacuation orders remain in place for the Horse Heaven, El Prado, Laguna and Al Bahr Shrine campgrounds. Two lodges, which had been ordered evacuated, have been destroyed or damaged.
Throughout the day, firefighters were airlifted into inaccessible areas to battle the fire.
Sunrise Highway remains closed. There have been four reported injuries.
It was dubbed the Chariot fire because it was first spotted Saturday near Chariot Canyon southeast of Julian. The Red Cross has established a center for evacuees at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine.
