Reader Photo: Well, he is skin and bones

Skeletons don’t need to eat, but children do.

At the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a young boy dressed for the Day of the Dead sits behind the scenes of the celebration eating popcorn. His painted face brings out his eyes gazing directly into the camera.

The frame caught photographer John Kayacan’s eye because the boy was sitting alone, away from the festival where you’d expect him to be running around.

“The shoot stood out to me,” says photographer John Kayacan. “Just a little boy behind a truck with his face painted like a skull — something so scary seemed so innocent.”

The popcorn bucket does well to disarm the boy’s scary appearance, reminding the viewer of the human underneath the costume and face paint.

Kayacan used a Fujifilm x20 to make the image.
