Covered parking

For photographer Carla Richmond Coffing, inspiration comes in all forms.

Coffing’s professional photography is a reflection of her field notes from her evening walks around her Atwater Village neighborhood. The picture she made of this car with her iPhone is a glimpse into that notebook.

The photograph feels like an icon of a Los Angeles residential street, with its overgrown foliage, a spot of color with the flowering tree and the street parking. The owner of the car shows that he or she parks here regularly and knows to protect the vehicle; it feels like a habit.

Coffing’s picture also feels very L.A., with the way she proportions the frame with the car: small and hidden in a greater expanse. There is mystery and intrigue, and a touch of melancholy. It is a scene one might pass by, pause and ponder.

Currently, Coffing is working on a project called Athome Atwater, a mix of landscapes and portraits of her neighborhood with the intention of photographing every person living on her street.

Her professional work can be found on Go-Carla-Go.
