7 injured as concert-bound crowd rushes gate at Howard University

WASHINGTON -- Seven people, including two District of Columbia police officers, were injured after a large crowd rammed a gate at a concert Friday afternoon on Howard University’s campus, police and university officials said.

At 3:17 p.m., police “received a call for a large crowd ramming the gate” at 6th Street and Howard Place Northwest, a D.C. police spokesman, Officer Paul Metcalf, said.

One of the civilians suffered a broken leg, Metcalf said, and all other injuries were minor. All seven people were taken to a local hospital, he said.

Howard is a historically black private university in Washington.

The crowd tried to gain access to the Yardfest event, part of Howard’s homecoming activities, after the venue “reached capacity,” Howard spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton said in a statement. She said capacity for the event, which draws students, alumni and guests, was 14,000 people.

Police restored order and the concert eventually resumed after a halt, Hamilton said.

According to Howard’s homecoming Twitter account, Juicy J, Big Sean, A$AP Ferg, & Bone Thugs-n-Harmony were set to perform.
