Philadelphia joy ride: 10-year-old boy, 1 van, 5 parked cars

Sunday is the traditional day to take the car out for spin (except, of course, in Los Angeles when a Carmaggedon is underway). But in Philadelphia, one such ride didn’t quite turn out as hoped, with the driver crashing his van into five parked cars.

The driver was 10 years old, police said

According to Philadelphia police, the boy saw the van, which was being used to unload furniture, with the keys hanging from the rear door. He allegedly grabbed the keys, jumped into the cab and took off -- for less than a block.

Though brief, the ride was certainly eventful, with the van hitting five parked cars. No injuries were reported.

When the stolen vehicle finally came to a stop, people rushed out to see what had happened, grocery worker Devante Gray told the Associated Press on Monday.

“At first, I had thought he had gotten hit” by a car, Gray said, adding that he was shocked to learn that the boy had been driving.

The boy, who was not named, was charged with juvenile counts of criminal mischief, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of an automobile.
