Swiss authorities will hand over to the Mexican government $74 million from bank accounts linked to the brother of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, the Justice Ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry statement said the money is “clearly of criminal origin.”

The money was in accounts that were frozen in November 1995, when Swiss investigators first suspected the funds had come from drug traffickers.

Officials said none of the money would be returned to the Salinas family; it is to go into a government account.

Raul Salinas, the former president’s brother, has said the money is legitimate and was given by business associates as part of an investment fund.
