Readers React: Honduras must show it is protecting its own citizens

To the editor: This story on youths deported back to Honduras still hoping to come to the U.S. touched my heart. (“In Honduras, U.S. deportees seek to journey north again,” Aug. 16)

How sad to be locked in your homes like prisoners or to have to leave the place you love for fear of death. The Honduran government is responsible for this tragedy, as it is doing little to protect the people of that country.

The United States cannot be the haven to all in the world living in countries with corrupt governments. What the United States can do is demand these governments protect their people and provide them with safe destinations within their own countries where they can be protected from this violence.

How do we do this? Cut off any financial aid that is given to these countries, as we know that the money helps the politicians more than the people. If and when they can prove they are protecting their own people and giving aid and safety to them, then we could talk about restoring some of this financial aid.
