Letters: A Bible lesson
Re “Betrayal or sacrifice?,” Opinion, Sept. 6
The problem with all the arguments about Abraham and his attempted, but aborted, sacrifice of his son Isaac is that everyone is taking the story literally.
Consider, if you will, that in that age of human sacrifice, to appease God of the calamities that had befallen them, the Jews wanted to eliminate sacrifice as a solution. To those who needed an explanation for the unexplainable, it was a poetic device to create a story that would convince them that human sacrifice was unnecessary for allegiance to a putative God.
The story should be considered only as a lesson in morality and nothing more.
