Readers React: Call ‘reproductive health’ what it is -- the killing of unwanted babies

Share

To the editor: UC Irvine Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky urges that all religious health centers break their beliefs and comply with California’s newly enacted Reproductive FACT Act, which mandates the provision of contraceptive and abortion information by licensed medical facilities and disclosures by unlicensed facilities like pregnancy crisis centers of their status. (“In California, free speech meets abortion,” Opinion, Oct. 16)

Doing so, he writes, does not violate the 1st Amendment.

But he apparently does not advocate that Planned Parenthood require women to see ultrasound pictures of their babies or be supplied information regarding adoption or the dangers of abortion.

“Reproductive healthcare?” The term is a lie. What it is, in truth, is the deliberate killing of unwanted babies.

To the editor: For decades, members of the self-described “pro-life” movement (more accurately called “pro-birth,” because their interest in life mostly stops once a baby arrives) have fought for laws requiring abortion providers to make false statements under the guise of “informed consent.” Never once did they acknowledge that such forced speech violated the 1st Amendment.

Now the shoe is on the other foot, so they’re screaming at the top of their lungs. Good luck with that.

I recommend a variation of the Proposition 65 warning: “Persons at this facility sometimes state falsehoods that are known to the state of California to lead to birth defects or other reproductive harm.”
