Likely title for Bachmann book: ‘Something America something’

Michele Bachmann has written a book and it’s coming out in November, just in time for Iowa -- er, Christmas.

Books by presidential candidates have become so common that the Minnesota congresswoman almost had no choice but to launch her own entry into the crowded marketplace. Heck, Rick Perry’s “Fed Up!” came out last year, when nobody thought he was running for president. (Hmmm…in retrospect, that may have been a clue.)

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has written two. Sarah Palin, two (and has spawned her own shelf at Barnes and Noble of Palin-centric tomes.) And Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain have had two come out this year alone.

Still, the uncontested winner so far of the Amazon primary remains Mike Huckabee, who leveraged a short-lived presidential bid into a publishing empire. Huck has written policy books, children’s books, Christmas books, diet books, religious books, and at least one entry in the “Twilight” series. (OK, that last one’s a stretch, but you have to admit that a teenage, bass-playing Arkansas governor fighting werewolves is an idea that could have some legs in the marketplace.)

So it’s likely a savvy move that Bachmann is under contract with Sentinel, Huckabee’s publisher, to produce her memoir. The contents of the book remain unclear, but Bachmann gave some hint in a statement released by Sentinel.

“People are the most important ingredient in life,” she said. “I love people, and I care deeply that our nation’s economy turns around so they can realize their American dream. This book will help to share my enthusiasm for an energized, pro-growth economy, and the life experiences that inform my optimism for the American people and for American greatness.”

According to Sentinel, those life experiences will be related through “untold” stories about her years as an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service, a wife, and a mother of five children and foster mother to 23 others.

Sentinel says the book is already finished, so if Bachmann wants to include a postscript with some fourth-quarter Perry-bashing, it will have to come as a late edit. Polls now show Bachmann badly trailing both Perry and Romney, so perhaps the publicity surrounding the book will be a welcome boost to her campaign before the Iowa caucuses early next year.

The book’s title has yet to be revealed, but if the current crop of conservative works is any indication, “America” will likely be part of the title, with a colon somewhere nearby. For example:

Perry: “Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America from Washington”

Romney: “No Apology: Believe in America.”

Gingrich: “To Save America: Stopping Obama’s Secular-Socialist Machine.”

Palin: “America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag”

Huckabee: “From Hope to Higher Ground: My Vision for Restoring America’s Greatness”

Cain: “This is Herman Cain! My Journey to the White House” (This breaks the pattern, but does deserve points for confidence.)

As lucrative as they can be, political books can also have a too-short shelf life. And some just don’t age well at all.
