As her presidential campaign heats up, Rep. Michele Bachmann will journey to Los Angeles in September to address a gathering of California Republicans.

The conservative firebrand will serve as the keynote speaker for the opening night of the California GOP’s fall convention, state party chairman Tom Del Beccaro said Monday.

“We’re very excited to have Congresswoman Bachmann joining us for the convention Friday night. I know her pure energy, vibrancy and leadership will be a hit with our delegates,” Del Beccaro said. “This is a great opportunity for us to hear directly from one of the Republican Party’s leading presidential candidates.”

Bachmann will likely be coming to Southern California at a key time in her campaign, four months before the Iowa caucuses.

Strategically, the move could also serve to counter a challenge from Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has been courted by several prominent California Republicans to jump in the race. And the trip will fall near the third-quarter fundraising deadline.

The California GOP’s fall convention will be held at the JW Marriott Hotel at L.A. Live Sept. 16-18.
