Obama bundler’s firm backed Romney ‘super PAC’

A Massachusetts-based building firm gave $25,000 to pro-Romney “super PAC” Restore Our Future, even though its chief executive is a major backer of President Obama.

John Fish’s company, Suffolk Construction, made the donation on Jan. 4. The company also donated to the super PAC twice in 2011, giving a total of $35,000 last year.

At the same time, Fish raised between $100,000 and $200,000 this year for the president’s 2012 bid, according to Open Secrets, and Federal Election Commission filings show that Fish gave $2,300 to the Obama campaign in 2007.

While records show that Fish has donated to both Republicans and Democrats in the past, it is unusual to see someone actively raising money for one campaign while using other means to give to a rival.

Last year, Fish personally gave the maximum $35,800 allowed under law to the Democratic National Committee and the Obama campaign.

A spokesman for Suffolk did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did the Obama campaign.

Suffolk has worked on projects around the country. The firm has completed a number of federal government contracts, including a $160-million post office and courthouse in Boston and two barracks for the U.S. Army in Virginia. The firm has won at least $374 million worth of government contracts.

Suffolk was founded in 1982 as a non-union builder by Fish’s father. Fish bought his father’s stake in the company in 2006.
