The parents of Chicago shooting victim Hadiya Pendleton will join First Lady Michelle Obama at the State of the Union address on Tuesday, as the president urges Congress to combat gun violence.

Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton and Nathaniel A. Pendleton’s daughter Hadiya was shot and killed on Chicago’s South Side in January, just days after the teenager traveled to Washington, DC to mark the president’s inauguration.

She was an honor student and band majorette at King College Prep High School.

According to the White House, the First Lady’s box at the address will include Americans from middle class families whose lives the president believes would be improved by his policy proposals. Obama will talk about how to help victims of gun violence, military families and immigrants, aides say.
