Briefs: Women’s Laguna Open Saturday

The 40th edition of the Women’s Laguna Open beach volleyball tournament will take place Saturday at Main Beach in Laguna Beach.

The one-day pool play tournament features a $1,500 prize purse.

Main Beach also will be the site June 4-5 for the 61st annual Men’s Laguna Open beach volleyball tournament. The two-day, double-elimination tournament is a match-play format with a prize purse now at $5,000. The top 28 teams overall (by rating), and top four Laguna Beach teams (by rating), are guaranteed a spot in the main draw on June 4.

Tournament sponsorships are available and volunteers are being sought to help with both the women’s and men’s tournaments.

The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour is in Surf City for the AVP Huntington Beach Open which started Thursday at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The tournament, the second stop on seven-city 2016 tour, opened with qualifying rounds Thursday and again Friday. Elimination rounds are Saturday, and the women’s and men’s semifinals and finals are Sunday.

At the first AVP tour stop of the season, last month’s New Orleans Open, Whitney Pavlik of Laguna Beach and Sheila Shaw (Redondo Beach) finished equal-ninth place in the women’s tournament, and Ty Loomis of Laguna Beach and Ed Ratledge (Huntington Beach) placed equal-13th in the men’s tournament.
