Explosion, fire gut business in H.B. building

A unit in a commercial building in Huntington Beach was declared a total loss after catching fire Wednesday.

Huntington Beach firefighters received a call at 2:47 p.m. about a structure fire in the 17000 block of Gothard Street. People at neighboring businesses told officials that they heard an explosion before seeing smoke and flames coming from the building, according to the Fire Department.

Fire crews from Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and the Orange County Fire Authority arrived at 2:51 p.m. and saw flames coming out the top of the building. Firefighters tried to control the fire from inside the structure but were pulled out and doused the flames from outside, officials said.

The fire was declared under control at 4:12 p.m., officials said.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, officials said.

The business in the unit where the fire originated was involved in environmental testing, officials said. The business owner also kept personal belongings in the unit, officials said.
