Briefs: Lewis takes sixth in Long Beach

Michael Lewis of Laguna Beach earned a sixth-place finish Sunday at the 42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Lewis and teammate Patrick Long of the EFFORT Racing team took part in a second practice session of Round 5 of the Pirelli World Challenge Saturday. Lewis went on to qualify with the sixth-fasted time (1:19.669) in the first of two qualifying sessions Saturday. In his No. 41 EFFORT Racing/Curb-Agajanian Porsche 911 GT3 R Sunday morning’s race, Lewis took sixth in the 30-lap, 50-minute timed race.

“We started sixth and finished sixth,” Lewis said in a statement. “That’s a solid day, and we survived that race. We brought the car home clean, and the Porsche 911 GT3 R was fast over the long run.”

Lewis and EFFORT Racing will next compete Friday through Sunday at Barber Motorsport Park, in Birmingham, Ala., in Rounds 6 and 7 of the Pirelli World Challenge.

AVP HB Open

The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour returns to Surf City for the AVP Huntington Beach Open May 5-8 at the Huntington Beach Pier. The tournament is the second stop on seven-city 2016 tour.

The four-day event starts with qualifying rounds May 5-6 and elimination rounds are May 7. The women’s and men’s finals are May 8.

At the first tour event of the season, the New Orleans Open, Ryan Doherty (Fountain Valley) and John Mayer (Mar Vista) won the Men’s title, defeating Casey Patterson (Huntington Beach) and Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) in Sunday’s final. Ty Loomis of Laguna Beach and Ed Ratledge (Huntington Beach), the No. 13-seed in the men’s tournament, finished in equal-13the place.

The women’s title was won Sunday by the team of Kim DiCello (San Diego) and Kendra Van Zwieten (Coconut Creek, Fla.). Whitney Pavlik of Laguna Beach and Sheila Shaw (Redondo Beach), the No. 5 seed in the women’s tournament, finished equal-ninth.
