Barons upset Chargers

Sunset League girls’ soccer teams were back in action Monday for key contests on the MLK holiday, and it was Fountain Valley High who registered the lone win among local teams.

Fountain Valley scored a 1-0 upset of rival Edison on the Chargers’ home turf. Senior captain Leigha Williams scored early and her sixth goal of the season would stand as the Barons played tenacious defense against the No. 2-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1. Fountain Valley goalie Kiana Flores protected the lead with 10 saves.

Fountain Valley, which had previously played host Marina to a scoreless tie Jan. 14, notched its initial league win in improving to 1-2-1 and 4-11-4 overall.

It was the first league loss for Edison which fell to 2-1-1 and 10-4-2 overall.

“Fountain Valley had a brilliant corner kick in the first five minutes, then played well defensively for the rest of the game,” Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said.

Huntington Beach battled host Los Alamitos to a scoreless tie in another Sunset League match Monday. Goalie Rachel Harris made eight saves to key the Oilers, now 2-0-2 in league and 8-3-5 overall.

In a big Sunset match Jan. 14, Edison and host Huntington played to a 1-1 tie. Amy Feinstein scored off an assist from Cassidy Helenihi and goalie Zoe Clevely made six saves for the Chargers. Darcy Weiser scored with an assist to Sawyer Koelsch and Harris recorded seven saves for the Oilers.

“This game was electrifying.” Crooks said.

Ocean View cruised to a victory Tuesday in Golden West League play by shutting out visiting Orange, 6-0. Kaci Montoya’s big game included two goals and three assists. Madison White (one assist) also scored twice, Daisy Moran and Micayla Shook both scored once, Analisa Chavez had an assist, and Emma Malsy had three saves.

The Seahawks came from behind at Westminster Jan. 14 to earn a 2-1 win in overtime. Montoya scored both Seahawks goals with assists going to White and Hannah Messina. Malsy had seven saves.

With the two wins, Ocean View, ranked No. 10 in CIF-SS Division 5, improved to 3-0 in league and 8-2-4 overall. The Seahawks travel Thursday for a key, 3 p.m. league match at second-ranked Segerstrom.

Girls’ Water Polo

Ocean View, then the No. 1-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 6, won four of five games over two days Friday and Saturday at the Diamond Bar Lady Brahmas Winter Classic. The Seahawks competed in the tournament’s 16-team Platinum Division.

The Seahawks dropped their opener to Covina Charter Oak (No. 7, CIF-SS Division 5), 7-6, but bounced back to win their final four games. They posted consecutive victories over Cajon (No. 6, Division 5), 7-5, Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda, 8-3, La Quinta La Quinta, 8-7, and in the ninth-place game, defeated Redondo Union (No. 8, Division 3), 7-5.

Previously, the Seahawks took their Golden West League record to 2-0 Jan. 14 by routing Westminster, 16-0.

Ocean View, ranked second this week, took on Orange in league play Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time. The Seahawks are back in action next Wednesday for a 3:15 p.m. league showdown at fifth-ranked Segerstrom.

In Sunset League games Jan. 13, Edison defeated Marina, 17-5, Newport Harbor defeated Huntington Beach, 10-3, and Los Alamitos defeated Fountain Valley, 18-2.

The Sunset schedule for next Wednesday at Newport Harbor High: Los Alamitos vs. Newport Harbor (5 p.m.), Edison vs. Huntington (6:05 p.m.), and Marina vs. Fountain Valley (7:10 p.m.).

Boys’ Soccer

Edison took on Huntington Beach in a Sunset League match Friday and scored a 3-1 win over the visiting Oilers. Dom Bair scored twice and Kobe Wood once for the Chargers who remain atop the league standings at 4-0.

Edison, ranked ninth in CIF-SS Division 1, improved to 11-3-2 overall.

The Oilers fell to 2-2 in league and 8-4-5 overall.

“After going down 1-0, the boys stayed composed and battled back to earn the victory,” Edison Coach Charlie Breneman said. “We played a good brand of soccer and it was an entertaining game.”

•Edison previously defeated visiting Marina, 2-1, Jan. 13. Bair and Garen Balikcioglu scored for the Chargers.

Huntington previously was a 3-1 winner Jan. 13 at Newport Harbor, a game in which the Oilers scored on their first two shots.

“We started slow and took over 12 minutes to even get a shot off, a credit to Newport for being well-organized,” Huntington Coach Sean Dick said.

Fountain Valley improved to 3-1 in Sunset League play Friday by edging host Marina, 1-0. David Volkert scored his ninth goal and Slater Kucera recorded his seventh shutout of the season for the Barons (3-1 league, 11-4-2 overall).

Marina fell to 0-4 in league.

“Our defense stepped up and did a great job earning the shutout,” Fountain Valley Coach Jason Smith said.

In a league game Jan. 13, Chico Cardenas scored twice for Fountain Valley in its 4-2 home loss to fifth-ranked Los Alamitos (No. 5, CIF-SS Division 1).

•In a Golden West League game Friday at Orange, Ocean View fell to the host Panthers, 2-1. Jose Huerta scored his ninth goal of the year as the Seahawks dipped to 1-2 in league and 2-5-3 overall.

In a league game Jan. 13, Ocean View routed visiting Marina, 5-1, with Huerta leading the scoring with two goals.

Football

Edison Athletic Director Rich Boyce announced Wednesday the school will receive a Wilson Golden Football as a part of the Super Bowl 50 High School Honor Roll program. Edison alum Glenn Parker, an offensive lineman in the NFL for 11 seasons who participated in five Super Bowl games, will present his alma mater the Golden Football at halftime of the Chargers’ 7 p.m. Sunset League boys’ basketball home game next Wednesday against Newport Harbor.

The presentation is a part of the Super Bowl 50 High School Honor Roll program which commemorates the high schools of every NFL player or head coach on a previously active Super Bowl roster. During his career, Parker, 49, played for the Buffalo Bills (four Super Bowls, 1991-94), Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants (2001 Super Bowl).
