Round one done in league

The start to the second round of league play begins Thursday for local prep girls’ basketball teams.

In the Sunset League, Edison resides in second place and Huntington Beach is third following game action Tuesday, both teams looking to catch Los Alamitos in the chase for a league championship. In the Golden West League, Ocean View is two games off the pace for first place.

Edison won for the fourth time in five Sunset League starts Tuesday by taking a 65-44 victory at Newport Harbor. Senior forward Jackie Bento had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and senior shooting guard Jennie Kwok scored 16 points for the Chargers.

Edison improved to 9-11 overall. The Chargers end the first half of league play in second place at 4-1, trailing league-leading Los Alamitos (5-0).

“We rebounded the ball well on both sides of the floor and everyone was able to play and contribute,” Edison Coach Sara Brown said.

Huntington Beach, the fifth-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1A, improved to 3-2 in Sunset League play Tuesday by winning, 72-13, at Fountain Valley. Junior forward Frankie Wade-Sanchez scored 18 points, junior guard Kaylyn Nakaji 11 points, and senior guard Sammy Gray 10 points for the Oilers.

Huntington is third in the Sunset standings, and 18-5 overall.

“The girls played hard tonight,” Oilers Coach Russ McClurg said of Tuesday’s win.

Marina was handed a 74-31 home loss Tuesday by Sunset League rival Los Alamitos. Senior guard Christina Mark of the Vikings (2-3 league) led the scoring with 20 points.

The Griffins sit atop the Sunset standings at 5-0.

Ocean View ended the first round of Golden West League play in third place. The Seahawks played their fifth league game Tuesday and fell at home to league-leader Westminster (5-0 league, No. 13, CIF-SS Division 1A), 49-43. Seahawks senior guard forward Treasure Robinson led the scoring with 20 points.

In a previous league game, Ocean View routed host Santa Ana Friday, 52-18.

The two results put the Seahawks, ranked No. 13 in CIF-SS Division 3A, at 3-2 in league and 11-8 overall.

Edison and Fountain Valley play 7 p.m. Sunset League games Thursday, the Chargers hosting Los Alamitos and the Barons home to Newport Harbor. On Friday, Huntington hosts Marina in a 5 p.m. Oil vs. Water showdown, and Ocean View hosts Segerstrom in a 5:30 p.m. Golden West League game.
