Streak ends for HB boys’ volleyball

The streak has ended.

The Huntington Beach High boys’ volleyball team strung together a national-record winning streak over the past three seasons. The Oilers, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, took that record of 121 consecutive match victories into Tuesday’s Sunset League home match against Newport Harbor. The eighth-ranked Sailors, coached by former longtime Huntington Coach Rocky Ciarelli, were able to halt that streak by pulling off a 25-13, 24-26, 25-14, 25-21 victory.

Senior outside hitters Sean Morrissey and Eric Betty both had 13 kills, and senior middle blocker Shane Holdaway nine kills for the Oilers who were without starting senior middle blocker Davey Kim who Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said was in Europe as a representative of the Huntington Beach High Model United Nations Program.

The loss put the Oilers at 16-1 overall and 1-1 in league.

Newport improved to 10-3 overall and the Sailors share first place with Edison in the Sunset standings both at 2-0.

“Newport came in tonight and had a great game plan, and executed well,” Pazanti said. “We were slow out of the gates, and never really got in a rhythm.

“We just need to regroup and come out with a little more focus Friday against Edison. I hope this will be a good wake-up call for the rest of the season.”

In other Sunset matches Tuesday, Edison won by sweep at Marina, 25-14, 26-24, 25-15, and Los Alamitos (1-1 league) swept visiting Fountain Valley (0-2 league), 25-13, 25-13, 25-22.

In Edison’s win over Marina, senior opposite Jacob Morgan had a team-high seven kills and senior setter Jacob Gilliam 32 assists for the Chargers, the sixth-ranked team in Division 1 who improved 12-7 overall.

“We came out strong and played some of our most consistent volleyball in the first set,” Edison Coach Matt Skolnik said. “Marina stepped up their play in the second set, but we were able to regain our rhythm and finish strong.”

Friday’s Sunset League schedule (5:45 p.m.) has Huntington hosting Edison and Fountain Valley hosting Marina.
