Oilers, Marina contend for league title

The Sunset League girls’ golf race will be decided by the end of the day Thursday.

Defending champion Huntington Beach took sole possession of first place in the league standings. The Oilers defeated visiting Los Alamitos, 217-223, to improve to 7-1 in league and 8-4 overall. On the same day, Marina was edged on the road by Newport Harbor, 222-223, which put the Vikings at 7-2 in league.

Junior Captain Abby Cahill continued her strong play in Sunset action by shooting a 38 in Huntington’s win over Los Alamitos at SeaCliff Country Club (par 36). Grace Lu of Los Alamitos took medalist honors with a 37 score.

In a previous league match, Huntington defeated Edison, 215-223, at Mile Square Park Classic Golf Course (par 36). Edison senior Pilar Hurtado was match medalist with a one-over par 37.

On Monday, the Oilers competed at the Ayala Golf Tournament at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills where temperatures reached the mid-90s. Caitlyn Nickerson won longest drive and Ella Poljak shot the low-round for the Oilers who finished sixth out of 18 teams.

Huntington took on Edison in a league match Wednesday. Results weren’t available at press time. The Oilers close out their league season Thursday hosting Fountain Valley at SeaCliff Country Club.

In Marina’s close, 222-223 loss to host Newport Harbor at Big Canyon Golf Course (par 36), the Vikings’ Angela Wu and Sailors’ Grace Ferrell were co-medalists with scores of 38.

In two previous league matches against Fountain Valley at Mile Square Park Classic Course (par 36), Marina (12-3 overall) first defeated the host Barons, 203-224, with Wu the medalist with a 36 score. In the second match between the teams, the Vikings’ Zahraa Hijara was match medalist with a 37 score in a 212-250 win over the Barons.

The Vikings end Sunset play Thursday with a road match against Los Alamitos at Old Ranch Country Club.

Ocean View hosted two Golden West League matches in the past week, and won both.

The Seahawks first defeated Loara, 12-6. Kendall Nakai swept in singles action and the doubles teams of Tabby Butler/Jane Vo took all three sets. Key points also were earned in two, close tie-breaker set victories by Connie Truong/Marissa Pippin.

Ocean View also bested Santa Ana by a 12-6 final. Nakai again swept in singles as did doubles veterans Butler/Vo. Singles players Truong, Megan Tan and Willow Medina also contributed set victories.

The Seahawks improved to 3-3 in league and 4-8 overall.

Girls’ Volleyball

Huntington Beach won its 20th match of the season and improved to 4-0 in Sunset League play by taking a 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 road victory Monday at Los Alamitos. Outside hitter Cami Sanchez had 15 kills, outside hitters Kierra Pearson and Maddie Kaprelyan each had nine kills, and setter Rachel Hall had 36 assists for the Oilers.

Marina and Newport Harbor squared off in a close match that went to the visiting Sailors, 25-17, 18-25, 25-16, 25-23. Opposite Abby Hills had 14 fills for the Vikings (0-4).

Edison improved to 3-1 in league with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of host Fountain Valley (1-3).

Boys’ Water Polo

The Sunset League season got underway Oct. 7 at Newport Harbor High.

Huntington Beach, ranked fifth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, scored a 19-6 victory over marina in the final game of a triple header. Huntington’s Skyler Munatones led all scorers with seven goals. Leo Yuno scored three goals to pace Marina.

Edison fell, 12-8, to Los Alamitos. Alex Nathan, Michael Allende and Cole Heydorff each scored twice for the Chargers.

In the first game, Fountain Valley dropped a 12-6 game to Newport Harbor. Ben Schmiesing scored four goals to lead the Barons.

Sunset teams were back in league action Wednesday. Scores weren’t available at press time.

Next Wednesday at Newport Harbor, Huntington and Edison face off at 6:05 p.m., and Marina takes on Fountain Valley at 7:10 p.m.
