Highlights from the Los Angeles Angels’ 3-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs:

AT THE PLATE: The Angels did not produce any extra-base hits. . . .Craig Gentry, who singled twice, was the only Angel to reach base multiple times. . . . Likely starters Yunel Escobar, C.J. Cron and Kole Calhoun each singled, as did Cuban signee Roberto Baldoquin.

ON THE MOUND: Right-hander Jered Weaver struck out three Cubs in two innings while allowing two singles. He did not surpass 83 mph with his fastball in his spring debut, but was pleased with his performance. “I don’t care,” Weaver said. “I was getting wins throwing 79 mph last year, so I don’t worry about it.” His fastball had an average speed of 84 mph in 2015; his lowest average velocity for a game, according to BrooksBaseball.net, was 82. . . . Among likely bullpen members, right-hander Fernando Salas threw a scoreless inning and left-hander Jose Alvarez served up a two-run home run to Cubs shortstop Addison Russell.

EXTRA BASES: Weaver said he was comfortable ceding the opening-day start to Garrett Richards after a franchise-record six straight years fulfilling the role. “I had a good run with it,” Weaver said. “Like [John] Lackey did with me, you gotta pass the torch every now and again. Garrett has earned it.” Earlier Friday, Manager Mike Scioscia declined to say who would be his choice. . . . Reserve right fielder Rafael Ortega made a sharp throw to get a Cubs runner attempting to go from first to third on a single. . . . The announced attendance of 15,446 fans at Sloan Park set a Cactus League record.
