Memories of Reggie Bush — at NCAA store

Share

It could be called irony.

USC football fans might call it hypocrisy.

With college football’s spotlight on autographed memorabilia in the wake of allegations that Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel accepted payment for his signature, here’s what happens if you go onto shopncaasports.com, the NCAA’s official online store:

On USC’s team page, under collectibles, there is an item for sale titled “Mounted Memories USC Trojans Reggie Bush Autographed 8” x 10” Photo.” The signed photo shows Bush sprinting away from Oklahoma players during the 2005 Bowl Championship Series title game. Price: $179.95.

In June 2010, the NCAA slammed USC with major sanctions for violations committed by Bush, the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner.

As part of the penalties, USC was ordered to disassociate from Bush and to remove all references to him on campus, including photographs and the school’s Heisman that was displayed in Heritage Hall. USC also vacated victories, including the 55-19 championship over Oklahoma.

On Tuesday, the website larrybrownsports.com posted an image from shopncaasports.com that featured the Bush collectible.

The NCAA on Wednesday did not respond to a request for comment about its website and the Bush item.

Asked if USC had a reaction to the NCAA website’s selling Bush-related memorabilia, an athletic department spokesman declined to comment. Coach Lane Kiffin also had no comment.

Quarterbacks struggle

Max Wittek and Cody Kessler each had a pass intercepted in the final practice before Thursday’s scrimmage at the Coliseum.

Quarterbacks were not made available to the media.

The quarterback competition will be a main focus in the first of three training camp scrimmages, but the secondary also will be scrutinized.

Kiffin said defensive backs are giving up fewer big plays than during spring practice.

“The corners are playing better,” he said.

Senior Torin Harris, sophomore Kevon Seymour, junior Anthony Brown and redshirt freshman Devian Shelton are among the cornerbacks competing for starting spots.

Kennard thriving

Senior Devon Kennard, who sat out last season after having surgery to repair a torn chest muscle, is comfortable in the “52” defense that enables him to play an end-linebacker hybrid position.

“I love the versatility,” Kennard said.

Several defensive linemen have said they are taking cues from the 6-3, 255-pound Kennard, who has started at end, outside linebacker and middle linebacker for the Trojans.

“It really is his natural position,” Kiffin said of a spot that enables Kennard to rush the passer or drop into coverage.

Kiffin anticipates that Morgan Breslin, 6-2 and 250 pounds, also will excel in the hybrid role.

“They’re not big ends,” he said of Kennard and Breslin. “They’re kind of tweener guys. It’s been a really good match.”

Quick hits

Redshirt freshman Chad Wheeler continued to work with the first-team offense at left tackle in place of injured Aundrey Walker. Kiffin said he hoped Walker would return Thursday…. Tailback Silas Redd, who had knee surgery during the spring, is being held out of most contact drills. He is not expected to participate in the scrimmage, Kiffin said…. Senior receiver De’Von Flournoy sat out because of an apparent knee injury.
