Carroll is selected coach of the year

Eight USC players and two UCLA players were voted to the all-Pacific 10 first team and USC’s Pete Carroll was voted coach of the year, the conference announced Monday.

Carroll, who guided the Trojans to a record fifth consecutive conference championship, shared the honor in 2003 and 2005.

The teams and award winners are selected by vote of conference coaches.

“It’s nice recognition from the fellas,” Carroll said. “I totally recognize that as the job we’ve all done collectively, and I appreciate that they think highly of what we’re doing.”

California running back Marshawn Lynch was offensive player of the year; and Cal cornerback Daymeion Hughes, from Crenshaw High, was defensive player of the year.

USC quarterback John David Booty, receivers Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett, center Ryan Kalil and tackle Sam Baker were selected to the first-team offense.

Jarrett, Baker and Kalil were all-Pac-10 in 2005. Kalil, Lynch, Hughes and Cal defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, who also played at Crenshaw, were unanimous selections.

USC nose tackle Sedrick Ellis and linebackers Rey Maualuga and Keith Rivers were selected to the first-team defense.

UCLA defensive end Justin Hickman and kicker Justin Medlock were first-team selections, Medlock for the second year in a row. USC safety Taylor Mays, UCLA cornerback Alterraun Verner and Oregon cornerback Jairus Byrd were co-freshmen of the year.

Cal’s DeSean Jackson, who played at Long Beach Poly High, was voted to the first team as a receiver and punt return specialist.

USC offensive lineman Chilo Rachal, defensive lineman Lawrence Jackson, linebacker Brian Cushing and cornerback Terrell Thomas were second-team selections along with UCLA defensive lineman Bruce Davis and defensive back Chris Horton.
