Dodgers left-hander Scott Elbert scheduled for Tommy John surgery

Now, you really didn’t think the Dodgers could go an entire day without some bad injury news, did you?

Prior to Wednesday’s game the Dodgers announced that left-hander Scott Elbert will undergo Tommy John surgery.
It’s more tough news for the 27-year-old Elbert, the former No. 1 draft pick who seemed to have found his role with the Dodgers last year as a left-handed specialist (1-1, 2.20 earned-run average, 1.22 WHIP).
Elbert had yet to pitch this season, trying to battle back from a pair of elbow surgeries. He was originally expected to return at the end of April, but his rehab stretched into late May.
He seemed finally on schedule to return, but failed his final test when he pitched in back-to-back games and his new problem emerged.
Team doctor Neal ElAttrache said Elbert now has a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. He is expected to miss the next 12 to 16 months.
His third elbow operation in less than a year is scheduled for next week.
The Dodgers have used the disabled list 18 times this season.
