UC Irvine eliminated by UC Davis

Freshman Rachel Nagel scored a career-high 20 points in her second start and UC Davis defeated UC Irvine, 80-71, on Tuesday in the first round of the Big West women’s basketball tournament at Cal State Fullerton.

The fifth-seeded Aggies (14-15) shot 59% and ended a losing streak at five games. They will play Long Beach State on Wednesday in a quarterfinal.

The eighth-seeded Anteaters (8-24) were led by Shereen Sutherland, who scored 21 points.

Nagel scored 18 points in the first half, surpassing her previous high of 15 points against Irvine on Feb. 7.

Junior Alyson Doherty finished with 12 points and a career-high seven assists, and senior Kelsey Harris added 11 points for Davis.

Cal State Fullerton 71, UC Riverside 59: Chante Miles scored 26 points, making 13 of 14 free throws, and the Titans (12-18) beat the Highlanders (17-14).

Kathleen Iwuoha had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Fullerton. Simone DeCoud scored 17 for Riverside.
