Tom Watson wins Senior PGA Championship

Tom Watson summoned up some of his old major magic, holing a three-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat David Eger in the Senior PGA Championship on Sunday at Louisville, Ky.

The 61-year-old Watson, down a shot with four holes left in regulation, became the oldest player to win a major since the seniors tour was created in 1980.

Watson closed with a two-under 70 to finish at 10-under 278 and win his 14th major, six since turning 50 to go with five British Opens, two Masters and a U.S. Open. Eger closed with a 67.

Keegan Bradley won the Byron Nelson Championship for his first PGA Tour victory, parring the first hole of a playoff with Ryan Palmer at Irving, Texas.

Bradley, the nephew of LPGA Tour great Pat Bradley, sank a two-foot par putt at the 419-yard 18th hole in the playoff. Palmer’s approach went into the water and he made a bogey with a 13-foot putt.

Bradley finished his closing round of two-under 68 with a par at No. 18.

Palmer (72) and Bradley finished at three-under 277, the highest winning score on the PGA Tour this year. It was the fifth playoff in six weeks.

Luke Donald won a duel for No. 1 with a playoff victory over fellow Englishman Lee Westwood in the BMW PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England.

Donald, second behind Westwood entering the tournament, birdied the par-five 18th in the playoff, hitting his approach within five feet before Westwood’s wedge shot spun off the green and into the water hazard.

Donald closed with a one-under 70 to match Westwood (68) at six-under 278.

Colombia’s Mariajo Uribe won the LPGA Tour’s Brazil Cup, closing with a six-under 66 in rainy conditions for a one-stroke victory over Lindsey Wright in the 36-hole exhibition tournament at Rio de Janeiro.

Wright, from Australia, had her second straight 68, including a birdie at No. 17.

USC’s Steve Johnson in NCAA singles final

USC’s Steve Johnson advanced to the NCAA men’s singles final at Palo Alto when his opponent retired in the middle of the second set after a disagreement with the chair umpire.

Top-ranked Johnson was leading, 7-6 (4), 3-2, and had a break point when Virginia’s Michael Shabaz hit a ball out of the stadium and was penalized a point. Shabaz walked over, shook the umpire’s hand and left the court.

Johnson will play Tennessee’s Rhyne Williams in the final. Williams beat Volunteers teammate Tennys Sandgren, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, to advance.

In women’s doubles, USC’s Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez lost, 6-4, 6-4, to Josipa Bek and Keri Wong of Clemson in a semifinal match.

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey had surgery to repair torn ligaments in his ankle sustained in a collision at home plate Wednesday night.

The 2010 National League rookie of the year said it was “highly likely” his season would be over on Friday after he broke a bone in his lower left leg and injured the ankle in a collision with Florida’s Scott Cousins. There is no timetable for his return.

In Baltimore on Monday, Virginia (12-5) will be seeking its fifth NCAA men’s lacrosse title and fourth under Coach Dom Starsia, who leads Division I with 328 victories. Maryland (13-4) is attempting to win its first national title since 1975.

Alberto Contador beat his chest and celebrated with his traditional pistol shot signal as he finished the 16-mile individual time trial in Milan, Italy, to secure his second Giro d’Italia cycling title.
