Canucks’ Daniel Sedin reportedly out of Game 1 against Kings

The latest update about Daniel Sedin’s health did not come from the Canucks, but Sweden, and one reliable source.

His father.

Daniel’s dad, Tommy, spoke to the Swedish website Allehanda.se and told the outlet that Daniel would be out of Game 1 against the Kings. The series opener is Wednesday night in Vancouver.

Daniel Sedin, who suffered a concussion March 21, practiced Monday but did not take part in the main session Tuesday, skating with the extra Canucks players afterward. His twin brother and linemate, Henrik, had told the Vancouver media on Monday that his brother was 100% and the Canucks insisted that Daniel had not suffered a setback.

The Kings were preparing as though Daniel would be ready and a former Canucks defenseman, the Kings’ Willie Mitchell, said he “100%” expected to see Daniel in the lineup. Now that might be Game 2 or possibly when the series moves to Los Angeles.

Miitchell’s career, in fact, was in doubt when he suffered a concussion when he was with the Canucks. It kept him out for eight months and he did not play when Vancouver beat the Kings two years ago in the first round of the playoffs.

“They are good people -- him and Hank,” Mitchell said of the Sedins on Tuesday after Kings’ practice. “I know they love the game of hockey but I know they love life and they love their family, too. I’ve been through a concussion or two and I know what he’s going through. It’s a tough situation.

“This is why you play. This is the time of year you want to play. And you feel obligated to be out there for your teammates, for yourself, for management, ownership. Everyone.

“But you also have to think about life after hockey and you don’t want to put yourself in jeopardy.”
