Daniel Winnik earns spot on No. 1 line, for the moment

The Ducks responded quickly to the emerging goal scoring of free-agent addition Daniel Winnik, inserting him Saturday into the top line with stars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

Coach Bruce Boudreau’s move to jumble the lines has been mostly by feel, and he said at practice Monday that he was unsure how the three lines will be slotted Tuesday night when the Ducks (3-1-0) play at San Jose (5-0-0).

“Once you get to know me, you’ll see my lines change a lot,” Boudreau said. “I’ll usually keep two of them together, but the third guy can change if I feel someone is going or not going.”

Winnik scored his team-best fifth goal Saturday when he replaced Kyle Palmieri, who has one goal and one assist.

Etem set for debut

Emerson Etem, a 20-year-old forward from Long Beach, could make his NHL debut Tuesday after being recalled from Norfolk (Va.) on Sunday.

Etem impressed Boudreau in the abbreviated training camp, and had 14 points in 40 games for Norfolk.

“We’ll probably have a roller coaster of moving guys up and down. . . . You’ve got to keep them playing,” Boudreau said. “These are opportunities. We want someone to take the ball and run with it. With the chance, Emerson is in that situation. You want pressure from underneath to push the guys above to get better.”

Maneaters

The Sharks have outscored five opponents 23-8. Forward Patrick Marleau has nine goals and is the first player since 1917 to have four consecutive multi-goal games. Center Joe Thornton has 13 points, with 10 assists, and forward Joe Pavelski has 10 points.

“I hope they have the flu,” Boudreau cracked. “We’re up against it, but we’ll go in and give it an old college try.”
