Galaxy acquires former UCLA star Chandler Hoffman in trade

The Galaxy added a bit of depth to its depleted front line Friday when it acquired former UCLA forward Chandler Hoffman from the Philadelpha Union in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

Hoffman is expected to be in uniform -- wearing jersey No. 30 -- in time for Sunday’s season opener with Chicago at the Home Depot Center.

The Galaxy, winner of the last two MLS Cups, heads into the new season missing forwards Landon Donovan and Jose Villarreal. Donovan remains on sabbatical through the end of the month, while Villarreal is playing for the U.S. team in the U-20 CONCACAF championships.

Hoffman, 22, a first-round pick (13th overall) of the Union in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, appeared in seven MLS games last season, including two starts, though he did not score. He also played in nine reserve league games, scoring five times.

During his three seasons at UCLA he averaged better than a goal every two games, leading the Pac-12 and finishing fourth in the nation with 18 goals in his final year, when UCLA reached the NCAA semifinals. That was the most goals by a Bruin since 1991 and it helped him win all-conference and All-American honors.

He is the fourth UCLA player on the Galaxy roster, joining goalkeepers Brian Perk and Brian Rowe and midfielder Michael Stephens.
