NFL: Wes Welker agrees to two-year contract with Broncos

Wes Welker, an undersized receiver who gained prominence as Tom Brady’s go-to guy with the New England Patriots, will begin catching passes from Peyton Manning after he signs a two-year contract with the Denver Broncos.

John Elway, the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, tweeted that Welker has agreed to the terms of a deal.

Said Elway via Twitter: “Agreed to terms on a 2-yr deal with Wes Welker. Excited to have Wes join the Broncos. His production & toughness will be a great asset!”

The 5-foot-9, 190-pound Welker, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, has caught more than 110 passes in five of the last six seasons. In those five seasons, he has gained more than 1,150 yards. The last two seasons he’s gained 1,569 and 1,354 yards.

Denver now has a trio of big-play receivers in Welker, Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas.

Manning joined the Broncos last season after sitting out the 2011 season with the Indianapolis Colts following four neck surgeries. With Manning guiding the offense, Denver won the AFC West with a 13-3 record and then lost in a divisional playoff game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, 38-35, in double overtime.
