Ted Ligety earns sixth World Cup giant slalom victory of season
American Ted Ligety, who had already clinched his fourth World Cup series championship in the giant slalom, won his sixth event of the season Saturday in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
Ligety edged Marcel Hirscher of Austria by 37/100ths of a second to win the giant slalom event, finishing two runs in a combined 2 minutes 14.76 seconds. Alexis Pinturault of France was third.
Hirscher won his second consecutive World Cup overall title this season.
“I had some of the most unbelievable runs this year,” said Ligety, who had his best World Cup overall finish with a third. “It’s been so great, just from Soelden [Austria] at the start winning by 2.7 [seconds].
“I was able to keep it going the whole year.”
Ligety, a nine-year World Cup veteran, had his best season this year, winning three gold medals -- giants slalom, super-giant slalom and combined -- at the world championships. He had previously won only one gold in 2011 and taken a bronze in 2009 in giant slalom during the world championships.
He also won a gold medal in combined at the 2006 Turin Olympics.
