The Rose Bowl announced Thursday it is naming an All-Century Class by decade to commemorate the playing of the 100th game on Jan. 1, 2014.

The Rose Bowl and Football Writers Assn. of America have partnered to assemble a panel of more than 50 experts to pick the team. Included among the voters is former L.A. Times columnist Mike Downey and longtime Bay Area writer Art Spander, who has attended every Rose Bowl since the mid-1950s.

A coach or player will be named for each decade with the top three nominees being released weekly beginning Sunday.

The decade winners will be announced at a Dec. 8 news conference in Pasadena along with the All-Century player and coach.

The 100th Rose Bowl this year will be followed with Pasadena also hosting the final BCS championship game on Jan. 6.
